Background

Empowerment of individuals and communities at grassroots level is an integral component of sustainable and national development. It enables grassroots members to fully develop their potential, creativity, and skills as active members of their communities and to participate fully at every level of decision-making, development, governance, politics both individually and collectively, promoting values of efficiency, accountable and sustainable development.

The need for the empowerment of grassroots communities through education, advocacy, mobilisation, training and nurturing for capacity building, social transformation and political engagement cannot be overemphasised.

Grassroots Initiatives is formed as a response for the need to promote the empowerment of disadvantaged individuals, groups, communities and societies for transformational change and sustainable development.

aims & objectives

GI’s aims to promote empowerment and activism of individuals and communities at the local, chiefdom, district, regional and national levels as a necessary basis for good and democratic governance, socio-economic development, positive attitude, and commitment to the discharge of effective delivery of services for community and national development.

Objectives:

  1. To promote the empowerment of individuals and communities at all levels as a strategy for the promotion of sustainable development and nation-building.
  2. To mobilise individuals, groups, and local communities for active participation in governance and decision-making process and to be proactively involved in local development agenda to promote accountability and transparency.
  • To help empower civil society members and people at all levels of society to be able to influence the formulation of public policies and programmes and monitor and assess the delivery of services and development programmes.
  1. To promote effective delivery of services in institutions and communities through advocacy and sensitization.
  2. To promote the culture of democracy and civic consciousness amongst grassroots communities for effective participation in democratic governance at every level.
  3. To undertake and promote development efforts, programmes and enterprises geared towards enhancing the quality of life of people in institutions and local communities.
